3D artist (Full-time)

Charleroi (Belgium)
Partial remote working (4 days a week)
Available immediately

How we work

Maracas is a young studio with ambitions for growth, so you will join a small team that will grow rapidly, offering opportunities for evolution. You will take part in the studio’s creation and development from the start and hopefully learn a lot of things along that journey with us. We also aim to be a positive force in the local industry, so initiatives like doing talks, teaching courses, taking part in game events, sharing on social networks… will be supported if you wish to do so.

The position is mostly remote, with remote daily meetings and physical meetings two days each month in a coworking space in Charleroi. A transition towards more face-to-face work is planned within a few years.

We have an open, collaborative and respectful employee culture, where we take care of each other and learn together to be better everyday. Check our values for more details.

Job description

We are looking for a versatile teammate to be the first 3D artist to join our team and work on a new project from the very beginning. You love creating engaging experiences with a bold creative vision? You want to be involved in every aspect of the game creation? You are not afraid to deal with the constraints of indie game development and are you like to learn new things along the way? Then you may be a great fit for our team to contribute to the success of Maracas while building lasting relationships.

You’ll be working on our first game, an open world adventure game with an unusual avatar. It takes place in a fantasy world with a cartoon-ish stylized fantasy graphic style. It is developed on Unity for a release on 2024 on PC and Switch.

In collaboration with the team and a freelance concept artist, your missions will be as follows:

  • Modeling 3D assets of all kinds: characters, props, environments… following a distinctive art style and technical constraints
  • UV mapping, texturing and tweaking within the game engine
  • Taking part in researching and iterating on the art style
  • Anticipating risks and adapting to the challenges of production, including deadlines and limited performances of the Switch
  • Collaborating with all members of the team to make sure your work fits with the technical and design requirements
  • Building environment settings based on blocked out (greybox) level design
  • Rigging and skinning characters and props
  • Animating the movements of simple characters, vehicles and environmental assets

Job profile

Ideally, we are looking for candidates who have a versatile profile, without necessarily having to be an expert in all areas. The skills we consider necessary are the following :

  • Mastery of Blender and Unity 3D
  • Capable of integrating your assets on Unity, testing and tweaking them in the game
  • Proactive to propose art solutions to design and technical problems
  • Eye for light, good understanding of composition, shade, colors
  • Good written and oral expression in English (we’re all French speakers for now but documentation is written in English to stay open to non-French speaking collaborators)
  • You are proactive to propose art solutions to design and technical problems
  • You recognize yourself in the values of the company

The following skills would be a plus:

  • Knowledge of optimization techniques
  • Experience with rigging and animation
  • Knowledge of shaders and Unity’s shader graph
  • Knowledge of particle systems and other VFX
  • Knowledge of UI and UX design
  • Experience with open world games and “wholesome” games
  • Knowledge of collaborative tools like Slack, Discord, Notions, HacknPlan
